Etos humanistyczny uwypukla nadrzędne idee ludzkiej egzystencji takie jak samopoznanie i poznanie świata prowadzące poprzez wiedzę o makro- i mikrokosmosie do dokonywania wyborów etycznych wynikających z należytego poznania ludzkiej natury. Człowiek ujawnia się tu jako contemplator mundi, poddany równocześnie imperatywowi nosce te ipsum („poznaj siebie samego”). Taką „summę” zasad i wzorców oferuje w polskiej poezji nowołacińskiej czwarta księga Elegii Jana Kochanowskiego , zwłaszcza zaś El. IV 3 Quae vaga curricula, nasycona myślą platońską i ciążąca ku esencji humanistycznej antropologii.
Elwira Buszewicz, Humanistic Ethos in Polish Neo-Latin Poetry
The humanistic ethos emphasises the superior ideas of human existence such as self-knowledge and knowledge of the world that through the understanding of the macro- and microcosm leads to making ethical choices resulting from the proper knowledge of human nature. Here, the man reveals himself as a contemplator mundi, at the same time subjected to the imperative nosce te ipsum (“know thyself”). Such a summa of principles and models is offered in Book Four of Jan Kochanowski’s Elegies, especially El. IV: 3, Quae vaga curricula, saturated with Platonic thought and gravitating towards the essence of humanistic anthropology. Here, the world is an artwork, and its cognition, flowing from the experience of beauty and awareness of benefit, is to be combined with an in-depth study of human nature. According to Kochanowski, knowledge about human nature comes not so much from observation or self-observation, but primarily from reading. The fundamental ethical directive seems to be the choice made by the man within the complexity of his own nature, i.e. giving his life the right direction at the crossroads between feritas and humanitas. For Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, it is expressed in the sense of being torn between earthly exile and the heavenly homeland; for Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski – in a vision of a journey through the thorny and abyssal maze of life. The guarantee of a safe journey is the vigilant reason. The principles given by reason and virtues also organise the ethics of social life. The social ethos should be based on the civic consciousness of the Nobility, who should also follow the path of reason and moderation to properly use their freedom, preventing the loss of freedom of their homeland. Humanistic thought draws on philosophical trends such as Stoicism, Epicureanism, Aristotelianism, Platonism, Scepticism, and Pythagoreanism, and that this is not without influence on ethical paradigms. Starting from Petrarch, however, each of these individual systems was eclectic, and the humanistic ethos, mainly based on the thought structures of Cicero and Seneca, took the form of Platonism flavoured with Stoicism. Eclecticism also resulted from the desire to reconcile the discourse of the most important ancient philosophers with Christianity. In Polish Neo-Latin poetry, Stoic inspirations dominate, which were easiest to reconcile with Christian ethics. The latter is embedded in the political and civic context and is inseparably related to the idea of nobility or nobleness that exceed the value of noble birth. It is based on the foundation of cardinal virtues, supported by ministerial virtues, needed by every person or specific social condition....
(przekład poprawiony i zmieniony wyszedł drukiem ponownie w 1608). Lipsjusz znalazł się wśród tych pisarzy ( Machiavelli, Guicciardini, Bodin), którzy w sile i jedności scentralizowanego państwa poszukiwali sposobów wyjścia z chaosu wojen domowych i religijnych zalewających Europę. Justyna Dąbkowska-Kujko, Ethical Categories in Political Thought of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
The author of the article regards the main work of Justus Lipsius (1547–1606) Politicorum, sive Civilis doctrinae libri sex, qui ad principatum maxime spectant as a text focusing the most important political ideas of old Europe. It is one of the major works of the sixteenth century proclaiming the ideas of the absolute monarchy, and at the same time political theories of “stylistic” or “aesthetic” Tacitism in their close connection with the neo-Stoic ethical formation. The Politicorum was published in Leiden, the province of the Netherlands, in July 1589, and from that time on until the mid-eighteenth century it was published over fifty times, translated into 24 modern languages, including Polish by Paweł Szczerbic and published in 1595 (the corrected translation with changes was printed again in 1608). In early modern literature dealing with state issues, reason (prudentia) was usually understood as the steering force of virtue, i.e. ordering to respect the real principles of government, and not absolutely understood good or customs and laws understood in detail. Lipsius wrote about prudence and virtue as two guides in civic life. He indicated social harmony and peace as the primary goal of the rule of the country. At the same time, he made political prudence the prime virtue – free from moral burdens, and far more important than justice or piety, which manifested in deeds and work. In his opinion, the ruler should follow the dictates of necessity or circumstances that arise and not justice, which should serve purely political purposes. Its role was taken by reason, treated as a cardinal virtue and the foundation of the theory of the Politicorum’s author. He told the rulers not to be afraid of using force, although only in justified situations, since the goal (public peace and security) was always more important than moral details or constitutional justice. Lipsius was among those writers (Machiavelli, Guicciardini, Bodin) who, in the strength and unity of the centralized state, sought ways to get out of the chaos of civil and religious wars flooding Europe. He created the concept of “useful pretence of virtues”, which suggests that he favoured the principle of “seeming to be good” over “being good”. For him, the ruler was an actor who played his spectacle before his subjects, showing himself as a friend of the people, a virtuous, just, merciful, generous and wise monarch, to gain recognition and strengthen his majesty and authority. Thanks to the trust in and respect for the prince, the people would not need to interfere with his rule and would voluntarily position themselves as “spectators”. This is how Lipsius saw the essence of the functioning of the prince and his subjects. If these roles were accepted, the state would be an oasis of security and subjects free from persecution, suffering and humiliation....
U progu polskiej literatury gospodarczej stoi przełożona przez nieznanego autora w XVI stuleciu praca włoskiego uczonego Piotra Krescentyna (Petrus de Crescentiis). Egzotycznym zwierzętom poświęcił cały Traktat XXI (dopełniając nim dwa poprzedzające – XIX i XX, obejmujące odpowiednio myślistwo powietrzne i ziemne oraz rodzime zwierzęta łowne). Tomasz Ślęczka, Nature in Encyclopedias of Agriculture in Old-Polish Times: Pietro de' Crescenzi and Jakub Kazimierz Haur
The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the image of nature in the works by Pietro de ‘Crescenzi (Petrus de Crescentiis) and Jakub Kazimierz Haur. The following elements are studied: the forces that govern nature, the Earth’s natural resources (i.e. plants, animals, creations of inanimate nature), and natural phenomena. At the foundation of Polish agricultural literature is the work of the Italian scientist Pietro de’ Crescenzi, translated by an anonymous author in the sixteenth century. The source basis was the work of 32 authors, from Hesiod to Albert the Great. The second work analysed in this study is a treatise A Storehouse, or a Treasury of Farming Economy Secrets (Skład abo skarbiec znakomitych sekretów oekonomiej ziemiańskiej) written by Jakub Kazimierz Haur, published for the first time in Krakow in 1689, and repeatedly re-published, which proves its popularity among contemporary readers. Both the authors recognised the influence of heavenly bodies on economic activity. De’ Crescenzi wrote mainly about the influence of the moon, while Haur mentioned the matter more extensively, not only about the moon, he also included a special table to make it easier to understand what planets affect particular elements of earthly activity and in what way. De’ Crescenzi devoted little space to the issue of the genesis of nature as such. Haur did not deal too extensively with the origin of nature itself and its creations since, according to what he believed, it was all created by God. The components of native flora and fauna are similarly presented by both authors – in appropriate places they depicted individual species in the form of encyclopaedic entry. Besides the native, “familiar” nature, there was also “foreign” one, sometimes only strange, sometimes dangerous. De’ Crescenzi did not often share this kind of information with readers. Haur’s work brings much more abundant material of this kind. He devoted the entire Treaty XXI to exotic animals (complementing it with the two preceding ones: nos. XIX and XX, covering air and ground hunting and native game animals, respectively). Due to the low economic usefulness, creatures of inanimate nature rarely appear on the pages of both works. Soil cultivation has always been heavily dependent on atmospheric phenomena. Rain, snow and even wind can significantly help or hinder the process of farming and achieving the desired economic effects. In farm compendia, much attention is paid to weather phenomena, characterising their action and indicating how the weather can be forecast. The primary purpose of farm compendia was to provide necessary information on plant cultivation and animal husbandry and, as in Haur’s work, general knowledge on agriculture. Nature was treated primarily in terms of utility, not aesthetic value. Agriculture encyclopaedias are both sources of knowledge about the world, its laws and rules, and living organisms, as well as peculiar repositories of inventive topics, useful to every reader....
Wiek XX to okres wojen światowych, rewolucji, wielkich migracji, wysiedleń, pogromów, wypędzeń, i emigracji politycznej. Epoka Auschwitz, komunizmu i antysemityzmu, śmierci Boga, , kresu Piękna i śmierci Poety. Wiek modernizmu, awangardy i ponowoczesności. Czas rozwoju zbrodniczych ideologii, totalitaryzmu i Zagłady. Okres wyzwolenia sztuki i artysty z daniny utylitaryzmu, a zarazem spętania tychże obowiązkami poza artystycznymi. O zaborczej niewoli i restytucji państwowości, poprzez sanację i okupacyjny terror, system jednopartyjnej władzy klas i kult jednostki w PRL., do transformacji i demokracji.
Robert Cieślak, Humanistic Ethos in the Twentieth Century – An Attempt at Reconnaissance The twentieth century was a period of world wars, revolutions, great migrations, displacements, pogroms, expulsions, and political emigration. The era of Auschwitz, communism and anti-Semitism, death of God, end of Beauty and death of the Poet. The age of modernism, avant-garde and post-modernity. A time of development of criminal ideologies, totalitarianism and the Holocaust. The period of the liberation of art and the artist from the tribute of utilitarianism, and at the same time of entrusting these duties beyond artistic ones. A fascination with Marxism and disappointment with its socialist applications alongside persistent resistance to the communist authorities, the ethos of struggle and solidarity. All this against the background of a complex attitude towards faith and religion in a multinational state, as well as the Roman Catholic Church as an observer or participant in political life, asylum for underground activity and an instance setting standards for moral conduct. From the captivity of partitions and restitution of statehood, through Sanation and occupation terror, a system of one-party class rule and the cult of the individual in the Polish People’s Republic period, to transformation and democracy. The years of building the financial order of the state, great economic crises, economic rule, shaping the consumer society, and at the end of the century also the internet society and, finally, transformation from locality through globalisation to glocalisation, i.e. the tendency to solve global issues on the local scale. The author tries to answer the question as to what extent the humanistic ethos in the twentieth century can be distinguished among the existing multitude of ideological and artistic trends. The description of the history of ethical discourse, above all the one rooted in the tradition of Renaissance humanism, and the attempt to reconstruct it in the Polish heritage of the twentieth century encounter many difficulties. Various types of displacement of thought, methods, contexts in which literary works and their interpretations were created, need to be reconsidered. Tus, the purpose of presenting or reconstructing the potential of the humanistic ethos in Polish literature of the twentieth century may therefore be to sketch the image of the basic cultural manifestations and philosophical inspirations in the mosaic of moral attitudes seen in various contexts of the era, than reporting ethical schools or creating something that could resemble a “ethical canon” arising out of humanism. That is why the author discusses various personal patterns appearing in the twentieth century: homo militans, homo religious, homo patiens, homo sacer, homo viator, homo aestheticus, and homo videns emerging at the end of the era. He is the man totally subordinated to the vision of technological enslavement – a concept of a new, uniform and common ethos composed at the end of the century, whose characteristics are individual, individual ethics not rooted in canons and groups, in fact remaining in a complete dispersion of moral norms, also lack of authority and no escape routes from the situation of terror that some time ago people voluntarily gave up themselves....
W tekście przedstawiono trzy projekty społeczeństwa obywatelskiego, stworzone przez polskich publicystów drugiej połowy XIX w. – obserwatorów i teoretyków życia zbiorowego.
W argumentacji przywoływała pouczenia starożytnych i naukę Chrystusa.
Badaczka wytyka Prusowi niekonsekwencję, generalizacje i naiwność. Zauważa jego pragnienie uczynienia teorii wykonalną. To kryterium pisarz uważał za uniwersalniejsze niż wzniosłe idee etyczne. Swój program adresował do ludzi zwyczajnych, „średnich”, unikał ekstremów i absolutyzowania idei, nawet prawdy i wolności.
W jej imię postulował asymilację Żydów i przyjmował retorykę antysemicką. Rozczarowany polityką, z czasem podporządkował swe poglądy orientacji narodowej, dla której poświęcił indywidualizm i dystans, aby stać się rzecznikiem racji większości. To w niej zaczął widzieć spełnienie ideałów humanistycznych.... Grażyna Borkowska, Models of Civic Culture in Journalism of the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century and the Idea of humanitas (Orzeszkowa, Prus, Świętochowski)
The text presents three projects of civil society created by Polish publicists of the second half of the nineteenth century – observers and theoreticians of collective life. The author focuses on the integrity of these models, their roots in the idea of humanitas and their relation to modern society.
As the first, Borkowska discusses the ethicism of Eliza Orzeszkowa, who described reality in moral terms. She preferred virtue to realism and pragmatism, which distinguishes her from contemporary people. She appreciated both virtues surfacing at the time of trial and everyday virtues associated with “ordinary” honesty, requiring the settlement of obligations towards other members of the community, treated equally. The reasons for the absence of this honesty the writer saw in the legacy of feudalism.
The values formerly belonging to people of high social standing Orzeszkowa associated with new economic (capitalism) and social phenomena (the emergence of the intelligence stratum, the growing importance of the middle class). She was not impressed with modernity, but she wanted to meet the needs of her time. As an artist, she learned from society and gave back more than she had received. Borkowska notes the convergence of this concept with the Herderian-Goethean idea of Bildung, originating from the Renaissance humanitas and Greek paideia.
In the 1980s, Orzeszkowa turns more clearly to the idea of the nation, which the author discusses on the example of her statements about the emancipation of women. The type of Polish woman was formed in the noble culture that grew out of republican Rome. She had access to knowledge, and as a citizen, she actively served her homeland, although her tasks were different from those of men. Thus, the emancipation project grows out of national tradition. It is to be crowned by universal virtues of justice or love of neighbour.
Through the prism of these virtues, the writer also spoke about Jews. She defended them as people, without mentioning the issues of economic, national and religious differences. In her arguments, she recalled the teachings of the ancients and the teachings of Christ. She wrote about their usefulness, but at the same time, she had no illusions about they being respected by people. Similarly, she criticized the death penalty as usurping God’s competence and ineffective.
As a second paradigm, the researcher discusses that of Bolesław Prus, striving for objectivity and the broadest possible variety of his observations, including low-life manifestations. Herbert Spencer’s organicism inspired him. In his opinion, individual social groups and entire nations should work together in the name of harmony for the happiness of citizens. It results not from ethical principles, as in Orzeszkowa, but from practical reasons. However, the writer also thought about the idea: the good of the homeland, which generates the good of individuals.
The researcher points out to Prus’ inconsistency, generalizations and naivety. She notes his desire to make the theory feasible. This criterion was more universal for Prus than high ethical ideas. His program was addressed to ordinary people, “average” citizens; he avoided extremes and absolutizing ideas, even truth and freedom. He turned towards activistic, practical and generally available values. He preferred will, deed, utility over art or religion.
Finally, the author presents Świętochowski’s liberalism, understood as an unlimited right to freedom. In contrast to Orzeszkowa and Prus, the writer argued for the right of the individual, not community – just like James Mill. A critical individualist by character, he often violated traditional sanctities. He attacked the clergy, Prus’ common sense, conservatism, and national myths. He promoted secular humanism, liberalism, democratism, rationalism, and relativism. In the spirit of scepticism, he saw the dark sides of progress and civilization. It was Epicurus who was the patron of his model of a man – absolutely free, who sold his soul to no idea. He also referred to the Enlightenment vision of citizen, based on the idea of pure reason, impartial morality, and the postulate of freeing oneself from prejudices and racial, religious and cultural conditions. Faithfull to this idea, he postulated the assimilation of Jews and adopted anti-Semitic rhetoric. Disappointed with politics, he eventually subordinated his views to national orientation, for which he sacrificed his individualism and distance to become a spokesperson for the rights of the majority. And it was this majority that he began to see the fulfilment of humanistic ideals....
Albert Ines (1619-1658), jezuicki poeta polski, nauczyciel poetyki i retoryki, kaznodzieja, pod koniec życia wydał swój dorobek w postaci trzech obszernych zbiorów: tomu liryków (Lyricorum centuria I [...], Gdańsk 1655), epigramatów (Acroamatium epigrammaticorum centuria I [...], Kraków 1654) i Lechiady (Lechias, Ducum, Principum, Ac Regum Poloniae, ab usque Lecho deductorum, elogia historico-politica et panegyres lyricae [...] Agnieszka Borysowska, Humanistic Ethos in the Poetry by Albert Ines
Albert Ines (1619–58) was a Polish Jesuit and poet, a teacher of poetics and rhetoric, and a preacher, at the end of his life published his works in the form of three extensive volumes: a volume of lyrics (Lyricorum centuria I…, Gdańsk, 1655), a volume of epigrams (Acroamatium epigrammaticorum centuria I…, Kraków, 1654) and Lechiada (Lechias, Ducum, Principum, Ac Regum Poloniae, ab usque Lecho deductorum, elogia historico-politica et panegyres lyricae…, Kraków, 1655). His Lechiada is the poetic catalogue of Polish rulers from the fabulous times to King Jan Kazimierz, aimed to educate his readers in the spirit of “Christian-political formation”. He addressed his poems to the members of the Polish nobility, but the book was later used in the educational process at the Jesuit colleges of the Polish province. In Lechiada, he tried to create the model of an ideal ruler (according to Jesuit political thought) from the virtues of piety, bravery and wisdom. Through his other comprehensive work Acroamatium epigrammaticorum, written at the same time, he wanted to influence young people. He fought with epigramatic works containing many texts he considered obscene, so he decided to create a competitive work, ignoring the erotic motif. The work Ines began to write as the first, and which was not inspired by external circumstances, but resulted from the spiritual needs of the poet and satisfied his literary aspirations, was a volume of lyrics. It contained reflective and philosophical songs permeated with Stoic thought. The philosophical reflections presented in these works focus on the problem of attitudes towards fate and its changeability, the relationship between temporal goods and internal wealth, the question of self-knowledge, avoidance of vain fame or fear of death. As a poet, Ines gave his pen to the promotion of Jesuit ideology in political ethics and spirituality imbued with Marian cult. With his work, he shows the way to the king and individual groups of society: the nobility, students of Jesuit schools, court circles. In more personal songs, he conveys the philosophical indications he follows himself, which is a mixture of Ignatian spirituality and neo-Stoic thought typical of his times....
Ancient Culture as a Possible Code of Western Culture in the Early Twenty-First Century
The researcher begins by emphasising the distinctness of his text, which is to capture cultural processes during their duration, and not to interpret the reconstruction of the past. He points to three reasons for marginalising antiquity and classical traditions after 1989: (1) freeing literature from political roles, (2) linking Classicism in the second half of the twentieth century with a high tone and morality, (3) breaking cultural continuity in the Western world. The ancient names are now empty clichés; the meanings of the texts of high and low culture have become equal; the past is not appreciated for its own sake. The meaning of the canon was questioned. Ancient texts are rarely read and reinterpreted existentially; antiquity has become unnecessary.
The next part of his text the author devoted to selected attempts to revive classical traditions. Leo Strauss represented an intellectual Gnosticism: he read the classics without attempting to reconstruct the cultural context, looking instead for meanings hidden for fear of the authorities. By reading Plato’s texts at the university, Alan Bloom wanted to cure the crisis of humanism resulting from the liberal-leftist revolution of the 1960s. According to George Steiner, the determinant of the European’s cultural identity is the knowledge of a canon of readings, which at every reading are translated into different language, cultural and historical codes. It is an act not only intellectual but also existential. Oliver Taplin, on the other hand, in his studies of the Greek tragedy questioned its strong connection with a religious ritual, which was an attempt to make it relevant for the modern audience.
The authors of all these concepts are not interested in antiquity as such. They construct a vision that they consider useful for modern man. They have sentimental feelings towards antiquity, based on distance, not naive ones (in Schiller’s understanding).
In the next part of the text, the researcher presents an example of updating interpretation of the texts of the classics. At school, they are often treated as a museum exhibition, regarded as foreign in advance. Young recipients find it challenging to identify with the classically taught Antigone’s dilemma. It is possible, however, to emphasise its reading so as to bring out the problems of the present liberal society, in which the individual must face the community. Such a reading needs a sharpened awareness of the method, operating in the category of cultural alienation and otherness. This can be seen in the interpretation of Euripides’ Bacchants, which can be related to the subjects of identity, otherness, transgression or cultural violence. Aristophanes’ Knights can be associated with the issue of liberal democracy of the early twenty-first century.
An allegation of presentism of such reading the author refutes by stating that the reconstruction of antiquity as it was, is both impossible and pointless. One does not read classics for themselves but to find oneself in them. Some are studied only for philological purposes – Majewski calls them “intermediary authors”, needed for the teacher to gain the methodology and knowledge to explain the so-called “instructional authors”, whose works can be updated because they contain problems important for contemporary culture. Their list is not fixed: Plutarch used to be instructive, now it is rather mediating.
Finally, the author formulates several postulates: one should cleanse the ancient tradition of axiological ballast, which is no longer needed, and interpret the past through the present, and vice versa, assuming the role of intercultural translator. This will help to arouse interest for culture in the new situation of the humanist, who from culture’s legislator has become only its storyteller....
Prezentowanie egzotycznej przyrody w niewielkim stopniu miało charakter poznawczy. Dariusz Dybek, Exotic Nature in the Works of Polish Writers of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
Researchers of Old Polish culture agree that the description of nature was made using two sources: experience and existing texts. Writers who undertook the topic of the exotic world, based mainly on the accounts of others. Usually, people of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth imported their knowledge about the exotic world. There are only a few original works written by Poles that present distant lands. Even though they undertook long expeditions, these trips were mostly political; thus, descriptions of exotic nature in their accounts of legations or wars are rare. Humanists acquired their knowledge from books. Philologists, and first of all, geographers, medicine specialists, and natural scientists describing the world referred to erudition, and they treated ancient and medieval works as trustworthy sources.
Not only travellers wrote about exotic nature, but also those memoirists who never went abroad. These topics were often used by preachers and hagiographers, but also by creators of non-functional literature. Sometimes, there were critical comments about the literary sources, mainly in diaries. The reason for questioning what had been written by previous authors was that some of the revelations were personally verified. This, however, did not mean that they came to doubt the authority of ancient and medieval natural scientists, and their works (as well as of other writers) were at the heart of European education. The correction of Pliny and others can only be seen in diaries and scientific texts, while in sermons or literary works there were no attempts to verify knowledge of exotic nature. To acquaint their readers with exotic animals and plants, authors often compared them to specimens of flora and fauna known in Poland or other elements of “domesticated” reality. The presentation of exotic nature was of little cognitive nature. Much more often, the motive guiding the authors was persuasion. Descriptions of exotic nature made it easier to moralize. This was done by focusing on, among others, God’s greatness as the creator of all wonders of the world, on explaining nature of Satan, comparing him to a serpent, dragon, or lion. Most often, however, referring to the exotic made it easier to judge a person. Then, usually, the characteristic traits associated with individual animal or plant became a specific reference point: the brave lion, deceitful viper, stubborn donkey, slow turtle, haughty peacock, and similar associations became the source of easily readable metaphors. Various forms of moralization did not exhaust the reasons for the appearance of exotic nature in Polish works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It was also attractive because of its uniqueness and captured the attention of readers by being different from the known, domesticated world. Old-Polish writers probably believed in everything they read or heard about exotic lands. The belief in the existence of a unicorn or phoenix and similar creatures seems to be quite common. One cannot reject the suggestion, however, that some specimens of flora and fauna “living” in mythology and works of naturalists were treated simply as a reservoir of motifs, which were used when writing about the man....

The Church of Reformed Franciscans in Węgrów was founded by Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, voivode of Płock. It was designed by the Dutch architect Tielman van Gameren while Carlo Ceroni was in charge of the construction works. Both the founder and the architect had to comply with the building regulations imposed by the Reformed Franciscans, which was overseen by a Franciscan brother who held the position of construction manager (praefectus fabricae). As all the brick churches of Reformed Fran-ciscans built in the 17th and 18th c., the church in Węgrów was of the wall- pillar type. It is one of the four Reformed Franciscan churches in the Wielkopolska province representing the chapel variation of the system, like the one built earlier in Warsaw....
